Romero School visit

Date: 5 Dec 2018

A group of Coventry schoolchildren have made a flying start to their French studies thanks to Wasps’ playing and coaching staff.

Year seven pupils from Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, which is part of the Romero Catholic Academy, went behind the scenes at Wasps’ Broadstreet training base to meet the Club’s Academy Coach and ex-Italy international Andrea Masi, and current Georgian international Zurabi Zhvania.

Both Masi, 37, and Zhvania, 27, speak fluent French after spending around 13 years between them playing in France’s top-tier, and held a question-and-answer session with the youngsters in French.

The visit came about ahead of Wasps’ big Heineken Champions Cup clash against French side Toulouse at Ricoh Arena on Saturday 8 December (kick-off 5.30pm), which Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School pupils have also been invited to.

Rhye Parry, PE and Wellbeing Co-ordinator at the Romero Catholic Academy, said: “The pupils were in awe of the players which is a good thing from an educational perspective, because they will retain a lot of the French phrases that Andrea and Zurabi said to them.

“The topic of conversation was very varied – we found that Andrea’s favourite pre-match meal was chicken and potato, and the best player he has ever played against was Johnny Sexton.

“The children now also know some key rugby phrases in French – so next time they’re out on the rugby field I’ll be testing their French when there’s a try, penalty, scrum or knock-on!

“We’re really grateful to Wasps for this opportunity – it isn’t easy learning a new language and this session with the players has really helped them to get off to a solid start.”

Verity Brown, Community and Match Day Marketing Manager at Wasps, invited the pupils to Broadstreet.

She added: “As we prepare to welcome one of France’s top teams and their supporters to Ricoh Arena, we thought it was the perfect time to help some of our city’s youngsters to swot up on their French.

“Hopefully the visit to see Andrea and Zurabi will stick with them and make them want to pursue French as a second language in the future.”

Tickets for Wasps versus Toulouse on Saturday 8 December are available from starting from £18 for adults, while Under 10s go free in certain areas.
