The former Highlanders and Southland fly-half, who has won 16 New Zealand caps, joined Wasps for the 2018/19 season.
Sopoaga’s senior rugby career in New Zealand’s Provincial Rugby Championship began with his native Wellington. He also featured for his country at Under 20 level in the 2011 World Cup alongside back-rower Brad Shields, with whom he is now reunited at Wasps.
Selection for the Highlanders soon followed, as did a Super Rugby title, and he was a fixture in their fly-half shirt ever since.
The exciting number ten claimed the Highlanders’ seasonal points-scoring record in 2015 when he amassed 191 and is also second-ranked in the franchise’s history for most career points.
His Test debut arrived in 2015 against South Africa, and to date, he has scored 55 points at international level.
His first season in the Black and Gold saw him rack up 163 points in 25 appearances - and he soon crossed the 200-point threshold in the 2019/20 season with an impressive 15-point haul to help Wasps defeat Bath Rugby in November.
