Weatherall's late strike extends U18's academy league unbeaten run

Wasps U18 academy side extended their unbeaten start to the league season to three games with a thrilling 22-19 home win over Sale Sharks.

The match was clinched by a late Monty Weatherall penalty, and as a result the black-and-gold youngsters remain at the summit of the northern section of Premiership Rugby's U18 Academy league.

Wasps scored first, building a 23 phase spell of possession before Finn Pietersen claimed a score which was converted by Weatherall.

The visitors responded with two quick-fire tries, which took them into half-time with a slender 7-12 advantage.

Wasps hit back soon after the restart, when another long spell of continuity eventually created enough space for Alfred Maudsley to claim their second try.

And although the home side were soon trailing for a second time, courtesy of the Sharks' third score, skipper Alfie Barbeary then continued his recent prolific scoring run by grabbing another equaliser.

This set up a tense finale, during which Weatherall clinched the spoils with a well-struck penalty.

Afterwards, coach Andrea Masi complimented his side for their character and battling qualities, which he said were the key to their success.

Wasps Under 18s are next in action at Rugby School, this coming Saturday KO at 1pm vs Yorkshire Carnegie.
