Wasps v Toulouse - Donate gifts to make someone’s Christmas

Date: 27 Nov 2018

Wasps are urging people in Coventry and Warwickshire to donate a gift to someone in need this Christmas.

The Club are appealing for the community to bring along non-perishable food, clothes or a small toy to Ricoh Arena ahead of their Heineken Champions Cup clash with Toulouse on Saturday 8 December (kick-off 5.30pm).

All of the food will go to Coventry Food Bank and clothing will be donated to Coventry Winter Night Shelter.

Donated toys will also be passed to Wasps players to hand out to children during a visit to University Hospital Coventry ahead of the festive period.

Three separate but specially-designed cardboard crates for food, clothes and toys will be open for the general public to donate on match day between 2pm and 5pm at the main Ricoh Arena entrance, and outside of the East Stand entrance at the Arena Park end of the ground.

The initiative is being organised by the Wasps Community Foundation – the charity arm of Wasps Rugby Club, and is being supported by packaging firm DS Smith who have designed the cardboard crates to hold the donations.

Dѐirdre Fitzhugh, Director at the Wasps Community Foundation, said: “Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for many of us, but it’s equally also one of the hardest times of the year for some, which is why we want to do all that we can to help those in need across the region.

“From speaking to the Coventry Food Bank we know that they are in urgent need of items such as coffee, tinned fruit, rice, and squash for families who don’t currently have enough money to feed themselves.

“We are looking for items that will help homeless people to stay warm during the harsh winter nights – so any clean hats, scarves, coats and gloves are welcome.

“In terms of toys we would politely ask that all donations are brand new and in packaging, as they will be handed out to poorly children in hospital.

“The cardboard crates will be placed just outside the main two entrances to the Ricoh Arena so that everybody has the option to play their part, as this is a fantastic opportunity for the Coventry and Warwickshire community to come together to try and make many people’s Christmases a little bit easier.”
