Wasps Under 18s secured their third win of the season as they sealed a dominant 50-13 victory over Northampton Saints Under 18s in the fifth round of the Premiership Rugby Under 18 Academy League at Warwick School on Saturday.

In extremely windy conditions, it was the visitors who took the lead through a long-range penalty from Ethan Grayson, however, Wasps replied with a try from hooker Alfie Barbeary.

The hosts grabbed their second of the afternoon through Jude Williams before Grayson responded with a try of his own making the score 10-8.

As half-time beckoned, Barbeary went over for his second try of the match meaning Wasps went into the interval with a nine-point lead.

The second-half saw Wasps take control with an excellent attacking display, racking up five tries. Barbeary and Williams both completed their hat-tricks while scores from Zac Nearchou and Nic Jacobsen resulted in an emphatic victory, as the Under 18s continue their push for a place at Finals Day.

Northampton scored their second try of the afternoon in the final play but Wasps came out comfortable winners after hitting the 50-point mark for the second time in as many matches.

Northampton took the lead in fourth minute after some ill-discipline from Wasps at the breakdown resulted in a penalty being awarded just inside their half. Saints fly half Grayson took full advantage giving the visitors a 3-0 lead after the opening exchanges.

Wasps responded extremely well to this and managed to build some pressure of their own in the Saints half. An efficiently-worked driving maul led to the ever-impressive Barbeary crashing over from five meters to get us on the scoreboard.

The boys then backed this up with some superb flowing rugby which eventually led to Williams scoring in the corner giving Wasps a 10-3 lead.

Although conceding soon after this with Northampton scoring their first try of the game from a driving maul of their own, Barbeary was again on hand to ensure Wasps maintained their advantage going into half-time with his second try of the match. Charlie Atkinson added the conversion meaning Wasps held a 17-8 lead.

It was again Wasps who started the second-half the better of the two sides and after a prolonged period of pressure and some excellent handling from half-back pairing Henry Mortimer and Atkinson, it led to number eight Jacobsen crashing over under the posts for Wasps’ third try of the afternoon. Atkinson was again successful with the extras in testing kicking conditions which put the Academy boys 24-8 in the lead.

This was the start of a dominant second-half display which quickly followed with tries from replacement hooker Nearchou, who has been in excellent try-scoring form this season, while Barbeary went over for his hat-trick putting Wasps 38-8 ahead.

A quickfire double from the rapid Williams ensured there was no possibility of a Saints comeback and saw him achieve his second hat-trick of the season. A special mention must go to Rekeiti Ma'asi White who was particularly influential as he made some powerful line-breaks in the build up to these tries.

Northampton managed to score their second try of the afternoon in the final minutes, however, this would not take the gloss off a superb attacking display from Wasps U18s, who deservedly recorded their third win of the season.

The team are back in action on Saturday 9 February as they host Newcastle Falcons U18s at Broadstreet RFC in the sixth and final round of the Under 18 Academy League, with both teams chasing a place at Finals Day.
