Wasps U18's summon the spirit of Webb Ellis as they march on unbeaten
Date: 26 Jan 2018
The iconic Close at Rugby School hosted Wasps' U18 premiership academy league fixture against Yorkshire Carnegie.
Heavy snow set in shortly before kick off to provide challenging conditions for both teams, but led by a brace of tries from skipper Alfie Barbeary the young black-and-golds proved up to the challenge, and duly claimed a third bonus point win from four outings.
This leaves Wasps five points ahead of Leicester, who have a game in hand, and the meeting between the clubs on February 3 now seems likely to determine who tops the northern division.
Wasps started the game strongly and after a lineout catch-and-drive hooker Barbeary powered over to open the scoring.
U16 fly-half Charlie Atkinson's conversion made it 7-nil, only for Carnegie to respond with a near-identical try of their own to level the scores.
Despite the poor conditions the young Wasps players handled the ball very well, and good interaction between Cam Anderson and Joe Phillips kept pressure on the visitors' defence.
The hosts' second try soon arrived, and it was another close range effort, finished by Zac Nearchou after a Sam Spink linebreak gave Wasps good field position.
More home pressure then brought a third score from a five-metre scrum. Centre Sam Spink carried hard at the Carnegie line, and the resulting phase saw Alfred Mawdsley cross for a score which Atkinson again improved, to make the half-time score 19-7 in the home side's favour.
Conditions further deteriorated as snow continued to fall, and with a few changes made to the home line-up progress was a little slower than in the first half.
But once things started to click, Wasps again dominated possession and territory, and created a platform from which the prolific Barbeary provided a repeat performance from close-range following a lineout drive.
Atkinson added the conversion to take Wasps in to a 26-7 lead, but Yorkshire weren’t finished there and the visitors' pressure eventually told with a converted try being the result.
