Wasps Under 18s secured a fantastic 42-31 win over Worcester Warriors Under 18s, as the two sides played out a 12-try thriller in the Premiership Rugby U18 Academy League on Saturday at Oxford Harlequins RFC.
Worcester led 19-3 after 20 minutes courtesy of tries for Sebastian Atkinson, Paul Wells and Tom O’Hanlon while Wasps only had a Henry Mortimer penalty to show for their efforts.
But they hit back with a whirlwind ten-minute spell as they ran in three tries courtesy of flanker Dan Eckersley, hooker Zac Nearchou and winger Jude Williams.
With the score at 19-18, it was Worcester who got the next points on the board as Wells grabbed his second try, converted by Atkinson.
Tighthead Alex Pleasants then got over for Wasps and Mortimer’s conversion had the hosts back within one point at 26-25.
Replacement back row Greg Fisilau then dived over to put Wasps ahead for the first time in the match but Warriors edged back ahead with under ten minutes remaining as O’Hanlon got his second try.
With the game on a knife’s edge at 31-30, the Wasps youngsters stepped up to the plate and an unconverted Williams try five minutes before time gave the home team a six-point advantage in a tense finale.
But Wasps sealed the contest in the final minute as Williams helped himself to a hat-trick, and Jack Hughes’ conversion completed a 42-31 win after a tremendous game of rugby played by both sides.
Wasps U18 are next in action away at Leicester Tigers at Oval Park on Saturday 5 January (kick-off 12pm).
