Wasps U18 team to play Saracens on Finals Day
Date: 9 Mar 2018
Wasps Under 18s head to Allianz Park to face Saracens on their home patch this Sunday (12 KO) in the Premiership Academies Finals Day.
From the 42 players who have taken the field over the six fixtures so far this term, a 23- man squad has been selected to represent the club in North London.
During the season, academy players Sam Spink, Cameron Anderson and Aaron O’Sullivan have made their senior Wasps debuts in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.
In addition, captain Alfie Barbeary, James Tunney, Will Simonds and Spink have been included in England Under 17 and 18 squads.
The season started off with a huge performance, beating Worcester Warriors 55-12 at Sixways. The young Wasps side then faced two big tests – drawing 24-24 at Newcastle and narrowly defeating visitors Sale Sharks 22-19 courtesy of a last-ditch penalty kick.
Yorkshire then travelled down to Rugby School on a horrendous day to face a Wasps side that defied the elements to put on an exciting handling display before coming out on top 26-14.
The unbeaten run ended against a strong Leicester Tigers side in game number five, but the final match of the regular season saw the U18s travel to Northampton Saints and deliver their best performance to date.
A six-try display saw them finish as 36-12 winners, and as a result clinch their place in the second-place play-off on finals day, where they face Saracens who were runners-up in the northern division.
Wasps Under 18 Coach Matt Everard said: "All the best to the young Wasps side in their final game of the season on Sunday and let’s hope we see many more of them representing the senior squad and their country in the near future."
