Wasps players learn Butchery skills with Aubrey Allen

Last Tuesday, a group of Wasps’ players took part in their first session at Butchery School, kindly hosted by Aubrey Allen in Leamington Spa.

The initiative was set up by Wasps’ lock James Gaskell who had plenty of volunteers lining up to try their hand as a butcher.

From learning safe knife skills, to preparing lamb shanks, chicken valentine and sausages, the players were taken out of their comfort zone and put to the test learning skills that will hopefully last a life-time. With the added benefit of being able to eat each dish they prepared!

The extra-fuelling certainly seemed to help during the performance against Northampton Saints last weekend. A good week at the office all round.

A big thank you to the whole team at Aubrey Allen for making the guys feel so welcome and for such an educational, and at times hysterical, evening. It might take a while to perfect the perfect sausage!

Being a professional sportsman consists of numerous high intensity, high physicality sessions, but the body can’t train all day every day so there’s also a fair amount of down-time.

Players are encouraged to use that spare time productively to learn a new trade, or study, or get work experience, as part of the long-term preparation for life after rugby.

Through both the RPA and Wasps Off Field Player Development Programme, a number of players are involved in a wide variety of off-field projects, keeping their minds ticking over as much as their bodies.
