The Wasps first-team squad recently swarmed on Go Ape in the grounds of Coombe Abbey Hotel to try and make the cut as elite axe-throwers – going head-to-head to try and hit the bullseye - before swinging from the trees in their own treetop adventure.
The players took a break from their busy training schedule as the side prepares for its first game of the season against Saracens at Ricoh Arena in the Premiership Rugby Cup on Saturday 21 September.
Wasps stalwart Jimmy Gopperth was one of many players to put their body and mind to the test at the attraction.
He revealed: “This was the perfect team-bonding exercise for us as it tests all of the skills and attributes needed to be an elite rugby player – and it had a competitive edge to it.
“The axe-throwing was a new experience for all of us but it requires every ounce of concentration to hit the target, while the treetop adventure really tests your agility.
“Some of the players aren’t big fans of heights but they really faced their fears up on the treetop course and despite the terrible weather, we all really enjoyed it.
“Thank you to Coombe Abbey and Go Ape for inviting us along to try out the new activities, it was the perfect team-building day outside of our busy training schedule.”
Richard Harrison, Managing Director of Coombe Abbey Park Limited, who operate the Hotel and cafes within the park and have partnered with Go Ape on the attraction, is thrilled to have welcomed Wasps players to have a go at the new attraction.
He added: “The Go Ape attraction has created a real buzz since opening at Easter and the axe-throwing addition has heightened interest in the attraction even further.
“It was great to see the entire Wasps team come together for the perfect team-building day out, and we hope it stands them in good stead for the season ahead.”
Luke Parker, Site Manager at Go Ape Coventry, commented: “Go Ape is a brilliant place to get active and explore new activities, as a family, with friends, or with your fellow teammates. It was great to see the Wasps first-team squad leaving having felt like they’d had a good workout!
“The day was a huge success and we loved seeing the rugby team’s competitive side come out in the axe-throwing competition.”
