Wasps Open Training Session

Date: 24 Aug 2018

Hundreds of Wasps fans landed at the Ricoh Arena to see the club’s first team stars put through their paces ahead of the new season.

Around 500 supporters attended a training session open to season members to see the likes of Ashley Johnson, Elliot Daly and Joe Launchbury in action before getting the chance to personally meet them, pose for photos and get signed autographs.

Dai Young’s men begin their Gallagher Premiership campaign at Worcester Warriors on Saturday, September 1 (3.00pm kick-off) before back-to-back home fixtures against Exeter Chiefs on Sunday, September 8 (2.00pm kick-off) and Leicester Tigers on Sunday, September 16 (3.00pm kick-off).

Andrew Holmes from Cheltenham was among the crowd at the Ricoh Arena and is confident of a successful season.

He said: “I’m looking forward to seeing Tommy Taylor – we missed his high-energy towards the end of last season and it’ll be good to have him back.

“I think the new signings look really good, and I think it will be a strong start to the season.

“I think it would be great to make the top four and I hope we do much better in Europe this year – I think it was an unfortunate set of circumstances last year but I think this time I don’t see why can’t go further in the competition.

Lynne Thompson, from Coventry, took time out of her summer holiday to watch the training session and thinks it is going to be a big year for one player in particular.

She added: “I’m really looking forward to seeing Josh Bassett play this year – I think he’s got great talent and has a good future ahead of him. The chap who sits in front of me at the Ricoh Arena always turns round and laughs at me because as soon as Josh comes on the pitch I just start shouting.

“I also like Nathan Hughes. He spotted our minibus at a service station on the way back from the away defeat to Exeter and came on board to say hello.

“There’s been a lot of new signings and it’s been good to come along to the open training session so we can put faces to names – I’m hoping we can finish above Saracens and Exeter this year.”
