Wasps Academy Players Promoted

Date: 11 May 2020

Wasps are delighted to announce that two of our young players have been promoted to the first team squad.

Alfie Barbeary and Will Simonds will join up with Lee Blackett’s side once the players return to training. U18 Senior Academy player, Charlie Atkinson, will also be joining the senior squad for all rugby sessions, whilst completing his strength & conditioning and medical programmes with the Senior Academy.

The Club can also confirm that a number of other U18’s have signed full-time contracts after being promoted to the Senior Academy. Dan Eckersley (Hooker; Bloxham School), Robin Hardwick (Tighthead Prop; Rugby School), Toby Baldwin (Winger; Rugby School), Ollie Hartley (Centre; Whitgift School) and Nic Jakobsen (Back Row; Bromsgrove School) have all put pen to paper on deals with Wasps as they look to continue their progress to representing the senior side.

Head of Academy and Recruitment Kevin Harman said: “Congratulations to all of the players who have signed their first professional contracts. This is the next step in their exciting journey and, if they continue to apply themselves and fulfil their potential, this club can offer them the chance to have a successful career.

“Seeing two of the Senior Academy players break into the first team squad justifies all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. It is really pleasing to see Charlie Atkinson coming straight out of school, and into the first team rugby sessions. This shows the symmetry between the Academy and first team programmes. There is a clear pathway for our young players, and it is up to them to continue to take these opportunities.”

Wasps CEO Stephen Vaughan said: “We take immense pride in the way that our Academy operates and produces talent, and in the manner that the boys represent themselves. The transition of players from our Academy into the senior squad is testament to not only their quality, but that of our coaches and staff. Our Academy is just one more reason to be excited about the future of this club.”
