Wasps A scored seven tries to beat Sale Jets 47-12 at Heywood Road in the final Premiership Rugby Shield action of this season.
Wasps started with a couple of dangerous attacks in Sale’s half. The second of which Michael Le Bourgeois was denied a try by just the bounce of the ball.
Sale had the better of the early battle at the scrum but couldn’t muster anything off the back of their set-piece.
Wasps Academy U18 player Tom Bacon got the first try of the game for Wasps, with a nice show and go after a half-break and offload from full-back Cameron Anderson. Jacob Umaga added the conversion to make it 0-7 to Wasps A.
Wasps went through multiple phases pushing deep into the Sale 22, before the ball was intercepted by Sale's Nathan Pope. Callum Sirker sprinted back and caught the Sale outside back, before Wasps cleared their lines.
James Seabrook made a break in midfield, off the back of a lineout off the top. Ben Harris was then held up in the Sale 22 for a scrum down to the home side. Wasps turned the ball over from the scrum and from close range Alex Rieder dived over.
Sale came back at Wasps, thanks to a penalty and the home side moved the ball deep into Wasps’ 22, but Wasps stripped the ball and kicked clear. Tom Bacon was then sent to the sin bin for taking his man out in the air.
Sale made the most of the man advantage and scored through hooker Harry Newborn from a driving maul. Emiliano Calle-Rivas missed the conversion to leave it 5-14 at the break.
From a nice back line move Cameron Anderson broke through and fed Callum Sirker to sprint around the cover and score. Jacob Umaga added his third conversion to make it 5-21 to Wasps.
Alex Rieder then got his second and Wasps’ bonus point try from the back of a dominant Wasps scrum five metres from the Sale line to make it 5-28.
Soon after Sunni Jardine, fresh from coming off the bench, was on the end of a slick back-line move to score Wasps’ fifth try.
Wasps were on a roll and Callum Sirker soon went over for his second try. Ross Neal fed him early and the winger skipped passed his man, before sharing a one-two with Will Wilson to score. Umaga converted to make it 5-40.
Straight off the restart Sale’s Ed O’Keefe read the kick in flight to sprint in and score in the corner. Emiliano Calle-Rivas added the touchline conversion to make it 12-40.
Gabriel Oghre rounded off the scoring with the final play of the game, as the hooker showed great feet to dance through the Sale defence untouched. The conversion was added to make the final score 12-47.
