Wasps A claim 12 tries in comfortable win over Sale Jets
Date: 18 Dec 2017
Wasps claimed an entertaining 12-try, 70-12 A League win over their Sale counterparts at a fog-shrouded Ivor Preece Field.
Eleven different players crossed for the hosts, while Owain James claimed a score in each half, as did winger Mane Nabetelevu for the visitors.
The hosts were soon on the board through full back Marcus Watson, who applied the finishing touch to a flowing move.
A driving lineout score, finished by flanker Connor Collett and converted by Jacob Umaga, then extended Wasps’ advantage to 12 points.
And flying winger James produced an excellent finish to claim the hosts’ third try, swatting off three would-be tacklers before wriggling over for a try which fly half Umaga again improved with a fine kick.
Hampson’s pacy break and some quick hands then sent Guy Armitage powering over for the bonus point try – again converted by Umaga.
Coventry winger Kwake Asiedu saw plenty of the ball, and deservedly claimed the fifth try, before a sublime Umaga offload sent captain Craig Hampson to the posts for number six.
Nabetelevu put Sale on the board shortly before the break, which arrived with Wasps 38-5 ahead, and this lead was extended immediately after the restart through replacement Cal Smith.
Coventry lock Cameron Gray then powered over following Asiedu’s break, before TJ Harris crossed in support of James.
Powerful winger Nabetelevu reacted fastest to dot down a loose ball for Sale’s second try, converted by Charlie Reed, but this respite proved to be only temporary.
James went over for his second at the hour mark, after which Gaby Ogrhe – now operating at No.8 after starting at hooker – applied the finishing touch to a scrum pushover.
And the excellent Umaga rounded off proceedings following a Brendan Macken break.
