Wasps Under 18s returned to winning ways as they sealed an emphatic 50-5 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie Under 18s in Round 4 of the Premiership Rugby Under 18 Academy League at Yarnbury RFC on Saturday.
In particularly windy conditions, Wasps scored the opener through hooker Alfie Barbeary as they dominated the opening exchanges of the game.
A second try from Barbeary and scores from Charlie Atkinson and Rekeiti Ma’asi White gave the youngsters a 22-point lead going into the half-time interval.
A rampant attacking display continued in the second-half with Toby Baldwin scoring Wasps’ fifth try of the afternoon before Jude Williams crossed, followed by a double from Zac Nearchou.
Our hosts scored their first and only try in the 68th minute of the match with Theo Smerdon going over in the corner, however, this would have no impact on a game which saw a fantastic performance from Wasps U18 who recorded their second win of the season.
Wasps took the lead in the third minute after a wind-assisted kick from Atkinson fell into the hands of Barbeary who ran 50 metres to score in the corner. The youngsters moved further in front with a try from fly half Atkinson after a fantastic dummy.
The attacking excellence didn’t stop there with Ma’asi White grabbing the third try before Barbeary crashed over for his second of the afternoon to secure the try-bonus point. Fly half Atkinson managed to convert one of these tries which was an impressive feat given the testing conditions and gave Wasps a 22-0 lead at the break.
There was also much to be admired about the defensive efforts from Wasps, particularly from the ever impressive Dan Eckersley and the outstanding Anjo Ademuwagun, who both worked tirelessly along with others in disrupting the Yorkshire Carnegie attack.
Wasps again started the second-half the better of the two sides and after a prolonged period of pressure, centre Baldwin came up with a piece of individual brilliance to score under the posts. This was converted by Atkinson making the score 29-0.
With the hosts’ defence tiring, Wasps sensed an opportunity to go even further ahead with the electric Williams scoring his side's sixth of the game following some superb handling in the backs and Atkinson was again successful with the conversion.
Hooker replacement Nearchou increased the advantage in scoring his first try of the match after an excellent inside pass from the influential Atkinson. Scrum half substitute Henry Mortimer added the extras.
Nearchou was in prolific form as he scored Wasps’ eighth try just minutes later to secure an empathic victory, and Mortimer again was successful with the conversion to make the score 50-0 to Wasps.
Carnegie managed to get on the scoresheet in the final minutes of the game to prevent a Wasps clean sheet with a sniping break from replacement scrum half Smerdon.
An outstanding effort from the U18s saw them deservedly record a second win of their Academy League campaign and in turn move up to second place in the Northern Conference.
The team are back in action on Saturday 2 February as they host Northampton Saints U18s at Aylesbury RFC.
