We’ve had a fantastic half term delivering Tackling Character sessions at Rokeby Primary school in Rugby! So far, the Year 3 and 4 pupils have explored some of the Game’s core values, including; Enjoyment, Sportsmanship and Respect; combining an interactive classroom lesson with a tag rugby lesson all led by Wasps Community Coaches.
Classroom lessons on the programme are designed to be interactive and inclusive for all pupils, with a range of activities such as: role play, writing short stories, and art work. Complementing the classroom lessons are our tag rugby lessons which celebrate the core values that pupils have been exploring during the classroom lessons to bring to life how these values are part of everyday life!
Mr Kay, teacher at Rokeby Primary said “It is great that the children can get involved in something different, other than normal school work, but also continue to draw on their behavioural, literary and discussion skills. Learning about core sporting values are key for their growth and development.”
Tackling Character is an engaging rugby themed values programme which includes 5 sessions. It covers Rugby’s cover values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS) to develop positive character traits through exciting classroom and practical activities. The five sessions should remind you of the skills you already have, and the strategies you can use in order to succeed both at school and later in your working life.
Pupils explore each value in depth to understand the dedication needed by professional athletes and how this dedication can translate into the working world, later in life. During the programme pupils will debate, discuss and develop their knowledge and understanding of the core values. The sessions will be linked to professional rugby to help pupils consider how sports values are applied in real-life situations.
Wasps Community Delivery Manager, Jordan Young said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer the full range of Premiership Rugby Champions programmes to primary schools in our Community. The programmes cover some really important topics and combined with high-quality rugby coaching they are a great opportunity for schools to get involved with. It’s pleasing to see the growing interest from schools and we’ve only got a couple of spaces left for this school year!”
