Season Members take centre stage for Wasps' first-team photo
Date: 11 Sep 2019
A Coventry teenager who overcame a six-month battle with illness has landed himself a starring role in Wasps’ official first-team photo.
Wasps season ticket holder Ben Spriggs, 16, was struck down with a serious illness in January of this year, but after countless visits to hospital, was given the all-clear in July.
Ben’s dad Steven – who is also a season ticket holder alongside his wife Jenny and other children Charlie and Daisy – initially contacted the club to cancel their season memberships following news of Ben’s illness.
Wasps kept tabs on Ben’s progress, which saw Ashley Johnson pay a personal visit to the teenager while in hospital, and following news of his full recovery, the Blue Coat Church of England School pupil was invited to appear in the first-team squad’s photo at Ricoh Arena ahead of the 2019/20 season.
Steven said: “Wasps have been brilliant with Ben ever since they found out about him being poorly – and spending the morning with the Wasps first-team capped off a memorable end to what has been a testing period for all of us.
“The highlight of the day was seeing the joy on Ben’s face, and him being able to catch up with Ashley Johnson after he visited him in hospital.
“Ben and Jenny managed to sit next to Dai Young in the photo, while I was next to Simon McIntyre and in front of Brad Shields – all were so friendly and I couldn’t resist asking Brad how his foot was doing, as he could have so easily have been on the plane to Japan.
“Memories of spending the morning with the players will last a lifetime - we can’t wait to receive the photo – it will take pride of place in our living room!
“We’ve been coming to all of Wasps’ home matches for three years now and have bought our season tickets for next season too – they are occasions where we can all spend time together as one family – and we can’t wait to create more memories together.”
Wasps’ first game of the season is against Saracens at Ricoh Arena in the Premiership Rugby Cup on Saturday 21 September, before their Gallagher Premiership campaign at Ricoh Arena gets underway against London Irish on Sunday 20 October.
Verity Brown, Marketing Manager at Wasps, added: “We were saddened to hear of Ben’s plight at the start of the year and have been following his journey over the past few months, and we are over the moon that he has made a full recovery.
“It’s not every day that you get the chance to meet not one, but all of the Wasps first-team squad, and we thought Ben and his family more than deserved the opportunity to mingle with the squad.”
