Wasps first team players will be visiting a Leamington pub to thank the town’s rugby fans for their support.
A couple of Wasps first team players will be visiting a Leamington pub this weekend to thank Old Leamingtonians Rugby Club and the town’s rugby fans for their support.
Wasps hooker Tommy Taylor and another one of his teammates are rocking up at the Fox & Vivian pub on Clarendon Avenue on Sunday, September 17 at 12.30pm ahead of Wasps’ clash with Harlequins at the Ricoh Arena (kick-off 3pm).
The players are then travelling to the game by coach with around 50 Wasps fans where they will be holding a question and answer session.
Phil Robbins began co-ordinating coach journeys to take fellow members and other fans from Leamington to the Ricoh Arena for Wasps home games last season, and intends to do the same this season.
The coach service runs return journeys from three pubs in the town – The Plough & Harrow, Fox & Vivian and The Rugby Tavern and from the rugby club.
The service is currently averaging around 50 fans per game, but attracted more than 300 fans for Wasps’ play-off semi-final clash with Leicester Tigers last May.
Phil, who lives in Leamington, said: “I knew of other locations that organised buses to get to Wasps games and thought ‘why isn’t there a service like this running from Leamington?’ which is how the idea came about.
“After trialling the service for a period last season people kept coming back, and we have continued ever since.”
Old Leamingtonians’ history with Wasps stretches back to 2007, when Lawrence Dallaglio and his squad used “The Crofts” facilities to train ahead of their Heineken Cup game with Munster at the Ricoh Arena.
Phil Eales, Old Leamingtonians Chairman, added: “It’s fantastic for us to be given the chance to watch regular top-class rugby right on our doorstep, and we are keen to play our part in enabling Wasps supporters to get to the games, as long as the fixtures don’t clash with our own league games”.
Neal Coupland who is Head of Community at Wasps said he was delighted with the support that the club has received from the local area.
He added: “Last season was an historic one for us as we welcomed nearly 300,000 fans through the turnstiles – the biggest ever crowd total in Wasps’ history – and it is initiatives such as this one in Leamington that really help to make a difference.
“This coach service has helped make rugby as accessible as possible to people and we hope this player visit will live long in the memory for those that were there.”
Tickets for Wasps v Harlequins can be purchased from www.wasps.co.uk/tickets and start from £23 for adults, while under-10s go free in certain categories.
