Dai Young reacts to Wasps' Heineken Cup draw

Date: 20 Jun 2018

Director of rugby David Young described Wasps’ Heineken Champions Cup pool one schedule as “difficult but exciting” following this afternoon’s draw.

The black-and-golds have been drawn alongside Gallagher Premiership rivals Bath, defending champions Leinster and French Top 14 giants Toulouse in pool fixtures which as usual take place in October, December and January.
It’s a very difficult draw, but that’s what you expect when you’re playing against the best 19 other teams in Europe,” Young said.
“It’s exciting to be drawn with the defending champions and Toulouse who have also won the competition several times – they will be great match-ups.
“We’ve also had some really good games with Bath in recent seasons, including a double-header in Europe three seasons back when we won at the Rec after they beat us at the Ricoh.”

Wasps fans await the team's arrival at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin

Both Leinster and Toulouse have lifted the trophy on four previous occasions.
Add Bath’s 1998 success to Wasps own triumphs in 2004 and 2007, and pool one contains an incredible 11 of the 23 historic European champions.
Wasps have previously gone head-to-head with all three of their 2018/19 rivals during the qualification stages recent years, so their boss is fully aware of what lies ahead.
“They will all be tough games,” he acknowledged.
“We’ll have to be at our best to get through, but hopefully we’ll have a bit of luck this year and get to play these games when we’re not carrying lots of injuries.
“Toulouse, Dublin and Bath are also all really nice places for our supporters to go, so I’m sure they’ll enjoy the draw. They are big clubs with great history and tradition and big followings, so they will be great occasions for sure.”
