Dai Young fixture reaction
Date: 7 Jul 2017
Wasps' Director of Rugby Dai Young shares his thoughts on Wasps 201718 fixture schedule on the day the Aviva Premiership's first 10 rounds are confirmed.
Here are a selection of quotes from the video, as Wasps’ Director of Rugby looks ahead to the upcoming season:
“The new season starts to feel real when we reach this fixture announcement. Celebrating our 150th this season is very special and we’ll take that as a responsibility as well. Some great players have worn the Wasps' shirt before our players wearing them this season, so we’ll feel we have a responsibility to back up last season and hopefully go better. It was a good season last season, but there’s still more to come from this team.
“It’s been fantastic playing at the Ricoh Arena and we’re looking forward to being at home for our first game. Sale Sharks have caused us problems most years and they’ve also signed a number of talented players, so we know it’s going to be tough. But we’ve got to back ourselves at home and we want to start the season strongly, with a good performance.
“It’s a massive start for us with some real hard games in there. A lot of teams have recruited strongly again and it becomes more and more competitive every year. Exeter and Wasps only lost four games last season, but I think it will be very tough to repeat that this season. Every game is one we could win, but equally every game is one we could lose which makes it such an exciting competition. It’s actually easy to get excited about every game, there are some mouth-watering matches for fans, players and coaching staff.
“For us it’s about continuity now. It’s about building on what we’ve done over the last couple of seasons and learning from some strong experiences. We’ve gone through some pain - losing in a couple of quarter finals and semi finals, then the final last season. We want to be up there again at the end of the season, competing for things. That’s easier said than done, talk is cheap and there’s a lot of hard work to be done between now and the end of the season. We’re just looking forward to it getting underway as I’m sure are our fans. We look forward to seeing them at the Ricoh Arena for our first game against Sale Sharks on Saturday 2 September.”
