Coventry man visited by Wasps stars!

Date: 28 Aug 2018

A Coventry man has spoken of a surprise encounter with two Wasps stars on his doorstep.

Steve Ratcliffe, 69, from Westwood Heath opened his front door earlier this month to be greeted by Gallagher Premiership players Elliot Daly and Dan Robson.

The duo, who were recently on England’s summer tour of South Africa, took time out from their pre-season schedules to personally deliver Wasps season memberships for Steve and his son Chris.

Retired banking professional Steve, who has season membership in the East Stand, said: “Elliot and Dan are two heroes of ours, so it was a truly special moment to welcome them into our home.

“We were told by the club to expect a visit after winning a competition prize, but never in our wildest dreams did we think it would be a visit from two England internationals.

“They spent a good 15 minutes speaking to us about rugby and signed a couple of shirts for us, it was just a great experience.

“I told Elliot and Dan that I want one more game from them than last season.

“You never know what will happen in sport, but here’s hoping they can deliver.”

Daly and Robson also paid an unexpected visit to Cheylesmore to visit Steven and Jenny Spriggs, along with their three children Ben, 15, Charlie, 11, and Daisy, 4, to deliver their season memberships.

Steven, who works for an international charity, added: “The kids were so excited to see Elliot and Dan walking towards our house, and they even spared some time to throw a rugby ball around the front garden with them which was a fantastic moment that they boys will cherish.

“Ben and Charlie play for Earlsdon RFC and were asking the players a lot of rugby-related questions, particularly Charlie who plays as a scrum half like Dan Robson, so he was able to pick up some tips from him.

“As a family we’ve seen Wasps come so close to winning the play-offs over the past two seasons.

“There have been a lot of new signings over the summer so it’ll be interesting to see how the team gels over the next few months.”

Fans who purchase a Wasps season membership before Monday, October 1 will be entered into a draw to win experiences such as a tour of the Wasps training ground, attending a press conference, and assisting the kit man in the changing room before a home match.
