City of Oxford College ACE Mid-Season Update

Date: 27 Oct 2021

The Wasps ACE squad started their preparations for the season back in July, with the players assembling at the Harcourt Hill Training Ground for pre-season training. Met by new Head Coach, Alex Guest, and the other staff, the squad got straight to work.

The Wasps ACE programme is a partnership between Wasps Academy and the City of Oxford College. The programme is specifically designed to provide players aged 16-18 with the opportunity to combine their full-time studies with their rugby development.

A tough but rewarding summer schedule had been planned to push the squad, but also allow the players to flourish when the season started. Pre-season culminated with a training camp in Cornwall where all 75 players attended to take part in the Truro College Festival.

After fixtures against fellow ACE League (South) teams SGS Filton and Truro College, along with Welsh College champions Coleg y Cymoedd, both the Wasps ACE and Development squads came out winners. The group made the long trip home to Oxford with two trophies before the prestigious ACE League had even started.

Head Coach Guest takes up the story: “After a narrow defeat at home in the opening round of the league, the side has gone from strength to strength. After that early blemish the ACE squad have gone undefeated, leaving them top of the ACE League North Pool.

"The ACE League, which is seen as the pinnacle of U18 schoolboy rugby in the country, is a tough and competitive league, but an exciting competition to watch.

“The league is split North and South, with the first block of games being played against the opposition either home or away. With Wasps ACE sitting top after the first block, they now look forward to the second block of reverse fixtures, before the excitement of Finals Day.”

Brooksby Melton College (H), SGS Filton (A) and Truro College (H) await the squad before looking to the final standings for the ACE league Finals Day.

The Wasps ACE, City of Oxford College rugby programme will be hosting an Open Event on Saturday 6th November, 10:00 – 14:00 at their Harcourt Hill Training Campus. Details can be found below or contact ACE Head Coach, Alex Guest on alex.guest@activatelearning.ac.uk
