Wasps secure first ever win at Sandy Park

On a cold and windy day at Sandy Park, Wasps produced a stunning performance to record their first ever win at Exeter Chiefs with a bonus-point, 26-19 scoreline as they moved to within three points of the Gallagher Premiership play-offs.

After tries by Jack Nowell and Nic White gave Exeter a 12-0 lead inside 22 minutes, three converted tries in the last nine minutes of the first-half gave Wasps a 21-12 advantage at the break.

Willie Le Roux, Juan de Jongh and Marcus Watson were  the scorers, with Lima Sopoaga converting two and Elliot Daly the other.

Despite playing into the wind, Wasps dominated the second-half with Zurabi Zhvania’s bonus-point try stretching the lead, before Jack Yeandle’s converted try ten minutes from time set up a tense finale.

Wasps then repelled a furious late assault before breaking away and coming close to a fifth try in the final play of the game.

With the breeze at their backs, Wasps started well, when Exeter spilt the ball after gathering the kick-off. The first scrum yielded a free-kick which Nathan Hughes took quickly. They controlled the ball through a series of phases before creating space out on the left. Le Roux came into the line and threw a sharp pass towards Hughes who was unable to hold on to the ball just inside the 22.

Exeter went ahead after seven minutes when Henry Slade sent a precise kick behind the defence. Joe Simpson turned to chase but the ball bounced into the arms of Nowell who saw off Simpson’s challenge to go over for a try. Joe Simmonds’ conversion appeared to be going between the posts but was held up by the breeze and dropped just short.

Wasps were then forced into an early replacement when Tom Cruse left the field and made way for Ashley Johnson. It was Johnson who launched a promising counterattack after a long Exeter throw-in went astray just inside the Wasps 22. Johnson gathered and threw a long pass to Daly who went through a gap. As he approached halfway he had Josh Bassett in support, but chose to take the ball into contact. Le Roux arrived but knocked on and Exeter were able to launch a counterattack.

Exeter were beginning to find some momentum with Nowell a constant threat. He was heavily involved in the build-up to their second try which ended with scrum half White crashing over, aided and abetted by his forwards. This time Simmonds’s kick had the legs to cross the bar and take the lead to 12-0 after 22 minutes.

Wasps thought they had got on the scoreboard after Gaby Lovobalavu went through a gap to take play up to the 22. He fed Le Roux and the full back’s long pass found Watson, who went over in the corner, only for the TMO to rule that he had gone into touch in the act of grounding.

The disappointment was short-lived as Wasps pounced on an Exeter knock-on to launch an attack down the right. Daly made the telling break before releasing a perfectly-timed pass to Watson and the winger’s inside pass sent Le Roux over for a fine score. With Sopoaga being treated for some discomfort to his right leg, Daly took on the conversion and his successful kick narrowed the gap to 12-7.

Moments later, Bassett took a knock in a tackle just outside the Exeter 22. He was replaced by De Jongh and the South African made an immediate impact. Hughes picked up from the base of a scrum to charge into the 22. When play moved out to the left, the number eight smashed through a tackle before being stopped just short of the line. De Jongh was in support to go over for a try near the left corner. Sopoaga judged the wind superbly to send his conversion over and give Wasps an unlikely lead.

That lead was stretched in the final play of the half when Hughes again broke from a scrum 35 metres out. He attacked the blindside and his cunning chip ahead bounced into the arms of Watson, who had a clear run-in to the line. Sopaga added the extra points and somehow Wasps were 21-12 ahead at the break.

After Wasps withstood early Exeter pressure at the start of the second-half, Jake Cooper-Woolley made way for Kieran Brookes, who was making a welcome return from injury. Wasps then put together some threatening attacks and came close when Bassett combined with Watson down the right, but possession was turned over ten metres inside the Exeter 22.

Wasps kept up the pressure and were denied a bonus-point try when Hughes was adjudged to have made a double movement as he stretched over the line.

With 22 minutes left, Will Rowlands replaced James Gaskell. He played a part in the build-up to Wasps’ fourth try, scored by Zhvania. After Lovobalavu found Hughes out on the right touchline, the number eight came infield and fed Zhvania, who exchanged passes with Lovobalavu before riding Matt Kvesic's tackle and stretching out his right arm to touch down for a superb try near the right corner. It put Wasps 26-12 ahead, with 19 minutes to play.

After a Bassett breakaway almost brought a fifth Wasps try, Exeter finally found their way through the stubborn Wasps defence. Yeandle was the scorer after a series of close-range thrusts. Simmonds converted to make the score 26-19 with ten minutes to go.

After Hughes was penalised for a no-arms tackle inside the Wasps 22, Exeter kicked to the corner to set up their trademark driving lineout. It was driven backwards, but the home side launched a sustained attack, taking the ball through phase after phase only to be kept out by heroic defence, epitomised by a double tackle from Simpson and Johnson which drove Sam Hill back over the 22. Eventually, Exeter were forced into touch on halfway with 22 seconds left.

Although the ball came back on the Exeter side, Nizaam Carr pounced to gather and charge downfield. Man-of-the-match Hughes arrived in support and was stopped just short of the line. Wasps recycled smoothly and Simpson kicked to touch to complete a memorable victory.

Wasps' next home game at Ricoh Arena in the Gallagher Premiership is against Saracens on Saturday 27 April. Tickets are available by clicking the button below, starting from £17 for adults, with under 10s free in certain price categories.
