Simpson double sees Wasps finish season on a high

Wasps ended a difficult season with a welcome 27-25 win over their old rivals Harlequins in the Gallagher Premiership.

The Black and Golds seemed to be cruising to victory after two tries by man-of-the-match Joe Simpson had put them 16 points clear midway through the second-half, but a strong Quins fightback narrowed the gap to two points and the visitors came within a whisker of a dramatic victory, when James Lang’s last-minute penalty dropped just short.

With Sale Sharks and Bath Rugby both winning, the result was not enough to take Wasps into the top six, meaning they missed out on Champions Cup qualification.

After a Marcus Smith penalty opened the scoring early on, Josh Bassett’s seventh Premiership try of the season, converted by Lima Sopoaga, put Wasps 7-3 ahead.

Joe Marchant’s score restored Quins’ advantage but Sopoaga landed a penalty to give Dai Young’s men a 10-8 interval lead.

On his farewell appearance in Black and Gold, Simpson stretched the lead with two tries in five minutes, both converted by Sopoaga, before Danny Care went over for a converted try.

After Lang added a penalty, Sopoaga landed another three-pointer, before Elia Elia went over from close range and Lang’s conversion cut the lead to two points with three minutes left.

With the last kick of the game, Lang fell inches short with a penalty from just inside his own half, and Wasps were victorious.

Quins dominated early possession and soon broke away menacingly down the left with Semi Kunatani charging towards the Wasps 22. He found Smith on his inside but the defence came back to cut out a further pass.

Moments later, Quins were moving the ball along the line when Gaby Lovobalavu put in a thumping tackle on Ben Tapuai. The ball went loose and Elliot Daly kicked downfield, but the referee ruled that the Wasps centre had knocked on in the tackle.

Wasps then won another turnover when Kieran Brookes put in a strong tackle and the ball bounced into the arms of Nizaam Carr. It was moved out to the left and a long pass found  Bassett, who had acres of open field in front of him, but the officials called a forward pass.

With eight minutes gone, the visitors took the lead through Smith’s well-struck penalty from 40 metres.

Four minutes later, Wasps responded with a magnificent breakaway try, which was begun by Nathan Hughes’ quick-tap penalty just outside his 22. The ball was moved quickly along the backs and Daly sent Willie Le Roux through a gap. Just outside the Quins 22, he found Bassett in support and the wing had the pace to outstrip the defence and go over in the left corner. Sopoaga added a fine touchline conversion.

Le Roux then showed a piece of sublime skill when he gathered a high ball and spun clear of the chasers to break away down the left and send a long kick downfield. Under extreme pressure, Smith did well to cover back and gather, before beating a series of tacklers to set up a clearance.

Smith then showed his attacking skills as he played a key role in a thrilling breakaway which saw Mike Brown go bursting through the middle and ended with Marchant going over in the left corner.

Quins threatened again when Kyle Sinckler pounced on a loose ball to burst away and it took a fine tackle by Simpson to bring him down as he approached the Wasps 22. A superb interception by Sopoaga then launched a Wasps counterattack, with Le Roux gliding through a gap to take play deep into the 22. Hughes was in support, but he was tackled as he received Le Roux’s pass a few metres short of the line and Quins won a penalty at the ensuing breakdown.

Le Roux then had a great opportunity to put Wasps back in front when a Quins movement broke down and he hacked downfield. He was leading the chase when the ball landed in the 22, just infield, but it bounced awkwardly and his next kick towards the line went dead.

Eleven minutes before half-time, Sopoaga put Wasps back in front at 10-8 with a 40-metre penalty, after Chris Robshaw had played the ball in an offside position.

In the final attack of the half, Wasps won a scrum just outside the Quins 22 and Hughes burst his way towards the line. Wasps took the ball through phase after phase, but the defence held firm and Le Roux’s chip to the corner bounced just beyond Bassett’s reach and into touch and so 10-8 was how it stood at the break.

Le Roux and Hughes combined in the first attack of the second-half, but Sopoaga was unable to hold on to Tom Cruse’s pass with numbers outside on the right. At the scrum, Wasps appeared to be in control but the penalty went against them. Wasps protested and were marched back ten yards into their own half. Smith went for the posts but his kick dropped narrowly wide.

After a typically bruising charge by Hughes set up another promising attack, Daly chipped over the defence beyond Bassett and into the arms of the covering Gabriel Ibitoye, who was bundled into touch just outside the 22.

Moments later, Wasps supporters were on their feet when Simpson gathered a loose ball a few metres from the line to dart over for a try on his farewell appearance in Black and Gold. Sopoaga added the conversion to take the score to 17-8 with 52 minutes played.

Three minutes later, Simpson added a second following Daly’s dazzling break and Sopoaga’s conversion stretched the lead to 16 points.

As the game entered the final quarter, several minutes of Quins pressure yielded a try for Care, which Lang converted.

Before the restart, Wasps made several substitutions, with the most significant seeing Hughes limping off, to be replaced by Ashley Johnson.

Moments later, the gap was down to six points when Lang was on target with a penalty from 37 metres.

Nine minutes from time, Wasps won a scrum penalty 12 metres inside the Quins half, just to the left of the posts. Sopoaga made no mistake to give his side a nine-point cushion. Le Roux was then replaced by Rob Miller, who came on for his 150th Premiership appearance.

Quins should have claimed their third try when Alex Dombrandt broke away from a maul just inside the Wasps 22. He seemed certain to score but stumbled just short and fumbled the ball as he stretched for the line.

A minute later, the pressure told when Elia went over from close range and Lang converted to reduce the deficit to two points with three minutes to play.

With Wasps pressing for the bonus-point score, they were penalised just inside the Quins half. Lang went for the posts but his kick dropped just under the bar and Wasps ended the season with a welcome victory.
