Tom Varndell joined Wasps from rivals Leicester Tigers at the beginning of last season. He was an instant success, scoring six tries in his first three games. He ended the season with an impressive total of nineteen tries. Ten of those came in the Amlin Challenge Cup, which included a quarterfinal hat-trick against Gloucester.
Varndell is one of the top try-scorers in the Premiership and, in his five years at Leicester, demonstrated his skills time and time again. He topped the try charts for three successive seasons. He made his debut for Leicester against Gloucester in November 2004 and went on to score three tries in his next game against Worcester ' the quickest hat-trick (13 minutes) by a Tiger in Premiership history.
Following his triumphs and amazing try-scoring feats with Leicester, Varndell won the Guinness Premiership Young Player of the Year and Land Rover Discovery of the Year in 2005/06.
On the international stage, Varndell was selected for the England U21s and took part in every one of the team's 10 matches in 2005, including the IRB U21 World Championships in Argentina. He was also included in the international Sevens side in Dubai, in 2005, just six days after earning his first senior England cap against Samoa at Twickenham ' a debut he marked with a try. His 10 try tournament tally in Dubai earned him the Player of the Tournament Award.
Varndell saw more Sevens action in 2006, travelling to Wellington and Los Angeles, before representing England in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where he won a silver medal. He was then included in England's full summer tour of Australia in 2006. In February 2008 he scored twice for the England Saxons and was named in the squad for the 2008 Barclays Churchill Cup, before being called up to the senior squad. He won the Churchill Cup with the Saxons in 2010, scoring four tries in the tournament.
