Marco Wentzel and Sam Jones today expressed their delight at being called up to represent the Barbarians for their upcoming games against England and the British and Irish Lions.

The Barbarians will be coached by London Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young.

Wentzel will have a chance to complete a unique double if he is selected to face to play the game in Hong Kong, as it would be the second time in his career to face the Lions having done so with the Southern Kings in South Africa in 2009.

Wentzel said: “Playing for the Barbarians one of the things I have always wanted to do and to do it this year with two fantastic games is something I am thrilled about. Playing against the British and Irish Lions is a bit of a lucky break for me as it comes around so rarely. I played them in 2009 and it was an amazing experience. It was test match intensity and a brilliant occasion in front of a sell-out crowd and I am massively looking forward to it.”

“Pulling on the Barbarians shirt is going to be special. It is something totally different. Playing at Twickenham and Hong Kong will obviously be huge occasions. Both of those teams have so much to play for and hopefully we will see a few of our Wasps lads get a chance in that England game. I am obviously destined to spend more time with Dai Young – he can’t get rid of me!”

Sam Jones was over the moon to be invited to the Barbarians as one of the uncapped players in the squad.

At just 21-years old Jones, has already represented Wasps at senior level 53 times and was the Club’s Young Player of the Year last season.

"Dai told me during the week and I was totally shocked! It was a massive surprise but an amazing one. I am going to learn an incredible amount playing with and against some fantastic players. Even when you look at some of the back-row names in there already like Imanol Harinordoquy and Sergio Parisse you can see what a great experience it will be for me to learn from these guys. Dai has shown a lot of faith in me by picking me and hopefully I can repay that and prove him right if I get a chance to play.”

“I am looking at it as a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not many people get to play for the Barbarians, especially not when they are young and uncapped so it’s a huge deal for me. I’ve had to cancel a couple of holidays but I had absolutely no problem with that! It’s a very special thing for me and my family and I can’t wait to get involved.”
