Post-match reaction: Dai Young

Reaction from Director of Rugby Dai Young following his side’s 30-33 loss to Sale Sharks.

“To come in at half time with the score at 16-14 we thought we were in a pretty good position to then kick on. Obviously we then got two yellow cards and that pretty much took the game away from us.”

“Both teams have probably got to put their hands up and accept that it wasn’t the greatest spectacle. There were a lot of errors, the skill level wasn’t great from both teams I thought really.”

“We had several players away on international duty and a number of others out through injury. We didn’t rest any players today. I guess that just serves as a warning for the rest of the season, that if we have a few players injured we may struggle.”

“Saying that we had a lot of young players out there, a lot of players without that much experience and so you have to be a little bit pleased with that final score line considering the side that they had out, which, with the exception of a couple of players, was pretty much their full strength side.”

“I thought that, fifteen on fifteen, the lads did very well, but when you go down to thirteen men you are always going to struggle. Dealing with one sin bin is quite tough but dealing with two puts you under huge amounts of pressure and that was the difference at the end of the day. We conceded nineteen points in that ten minute period. Once we were back to a full complement I thought we did quite well really.”

Young also singled out Charlie Hayter, who made his Adams Park debut with an adept performance, picking up a try to boot.

“I thought that with ball in hand Charlie looked very good today and he took his try really well. Obviously it is a bit of a step up from the level he has been playing this season and it will take him a bit of time to adjust to that but he gave a very good account of himself today. There’s no point bringing somebody in who isn’t going to figure in our plans. However, with Chris Bell playing as well as he has done this season and Elliot Daly and Andrea Masi coming back from international duty he is going to have to go some to dislodge those guys.”
