Post-match reaction: Dai Young

Post-match reaction from London Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young

Young watched his side secure an Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final berth with a huge 71-7 win over Rugby Mogliano.

“This game was as much about a mental battle as a physical one. We talked about having a good start and we did that. We had a real bite to our defence and we forced a lot of turnover ball which created scores early on. We got the bonus point early and we can take a lot of confidence from that. There were no injuries and we gave game-time to guys who needed it so all in all you have to be quite happy with that.”

Wasps head to Newport Gwent Dragons on Thursday night where a win would help ensure that the quarter-final would be at Adams Park and Young said his side will be totally focused on going there for a win.

“The Newport game is hugely important. No matter what had happened here today our focus wouldn’t have changed going there. It’s a game we have to win to secure a home quarter-final and that is our focus. Nobody knows better than me how difficult it is to go to Rodney Parade. They enjoy spoiling a party that’s for sure. They are a dogged team and they are playing for each other at the moment. From our point of view to qualify for the quarters with a game in hand is a major achievement and if we can get a home draw I think we will be very confident.”

The game also brought a record for winger Tom Varndell who, in scoring three tries within the opening 13 minutes, secured the quickest ever hat-trick in European rugby. Young praised his wing-man.

“I know Tom was very disappointed not to get a call-up to England this week. I know he is not far from it at England level and he as just got to keep knocking on the door. I am pleased with his form and all he can do is keep on playing the way he is. You can never doubt his finishing ability that’s for sure.”
