Sam Jones announced as new CoacHclass Ambassador

From participant to professional player

We are delighted to announce that London Wasps' flanker Sam Jones will be our CoacHclass Programme Ambassador from 1st January 2013, taking over from Joe Simpson.

Scrum-half Joe Simpson has been a fantastic role model during his 2-year tenure as the Ambassador for our Grassroots Rugby Programme. Joe's style of play, dedication to his profession and his rise through the ranks from the London Wasps Academy to London Wasps & England in just 5 years made him the perfect example of fulfilling potential to our young players. Our CoacHclass Programme is indebted to Joe for all his help in supporting the London Wasps CoacHclass over the 2-year period.

Sam Jones' link with our CoacHclass is a close one, because as a young player he attended the programme at Community Partner Club Aylesbury RFC. As a previous participant, and as a former player at Community Partners Aylesbury RFC, Aylesbury Grammar School and Chinnor RFC he is perfectly placed to demonstrate to all of our participants that their rugby dreams can come true.

Sam told CoacHclass Programme Officer Ryan Hunt, "I'm delighted to accept the opportunity to become the London Wasps CoacHclass Ambassador. The programme was a real springboard for me, and was was a great event to attend and practice new ideas and train with different people. At the age I attended, I realised quickly that young players can't learn enough. The coaches I had previously were good, but the CoacHclass coaches taught rugby as a whole rather than basics and isolated skills. It was more technical and game-related than I was used to and that really helped with my development."

Look out for an article in our Match Day Programme v Sale Sharks on 23rd December when Sam Jones talks about his rise through the rugby ranks. You can preview the article here Read more about our CoacHclass Programme here.

SAM JONES BIOGRAPHY

Born in Aylesbury, Sam Jones started playing rugby at Aylesbury Grammar School and Aylesbury RFC, aged 11 and rose through the ranks of the Wasps Academy system to make his Wasps senior debut in November 2010 against Newport Gwent Dragons, having featured many times for the Wasps 'A' team.

Having represented England at U16 and U18 levels, Sam was a key member of the England U20 side that reached the final of the 2011 Junior World Cup. As a young developing back-rower Sam was exposed to significant first team action last year following injuries to a number of senior players and despite the difficult circumstances, the youngster shone across the back-row with a Man of the Match performance at number 8 in a key win over London Irish one of his key highlights. Sam was awarded the London Wasps Young Player of the Year award at the end of the season.

Away from rugby, Sam balances his professional rugby commitments with a full-time degree in English at King's College London.
