Wasps clawed back a 10 point deficit to share the points with Bayonne who they face again on Thursday night, and Young says his side must finish the job.
“I’ve just said to the players that it’s halfway now between us two and we need to finish it on Thursday with a win at home. I am quite proud of the effort tonight. We spent a lot of time defending in our 22 and our defence was outstanding at times and we thoroughly deserved a draw. Right at the end we could have come away with a win but it wasn’t to be.”
Young said that his side showed good character in the second half to get in with a chance to win the game.
“We made some silly mistakes in the first half which gave them good field position. We went in still quite confident at halftime even though they scored a try just before the break. We felt if we restricted them in how we were defending we could control the game and we did that in the second half. It was a bit of a wonder finish from Christian Wade for his try and that got us right back in the game.”
Young said his side need to show more accuracy in the return leg on Thursday night.
“There is a lot we could be satisfied with tonight but we’ve got to control the ball and control the field and be more accurate with our possession when we play at home on Thursday.”
