Calling all Scouts!

For the first time ever a large contingent of Scouts, of all ages and from across the country, will come together to parade their colours and renew their promise at a special St George’s Day rugby game

This event will take place on Saturday 24th April at Twickenham Stadium in front of an estimated 82,000 sellout crowd. English rugby union giants London Wasps and Bath will battle it out in the penultimate round of the Guinness Premiership, kick is at off 5.30pm. As well as a thrilling game of rugby, the event will be a celebration of our Patron Saint George; spectators will enjoy a complete program of exciting and rousing family entertainment. The event will provide a dramatic setting for the procession and renewal of the Scout Promise, and will be a great opportunity for family members to watch their children take part in this momentous occasion.

£1 from each ticket sold will go to Help for Heroes, the official charity of the St George’s Day Game, and from each Scout ticket sold an additional £1.50 will be contributed to the local Scout Jamboree contingent fund.

Each Scout Group that registers to join the St George’s Day Game will have the opportunity to stand proudly on hallowed ground that is the home of English Rugby and renew their Scout Promise. To mark the occasion, all participants will be provided with a 2010 commemorative event badge.

Commenting on the partnership with the Scouts, former Wasps Captain and World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio said, “Rugby and Scouting share a lot of similar values; seeing the look on the face of a Cub Scout or Beaver Scout when he or she takes their Scout promise reminds me of the pride you get when standing singing the national anthem representing your country. It will be great to see these two iconic examples of positive national passion join forces in a celebration of St George’s Day.”

Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout Movement, chose Saint George to be their Patron Saint because he felt St George embodied all the traits that Scouting values such as perseverance and courage in the face of adversity and the desire to support and help others. St George's day falls on 23rd April each year and most Scout Districts hold some form of promise renewal ceremony: “to help others and to do their best in all situations”. This year all those Scouts who attend this event will be part of a very special occasion.

The Wasps St George’s Day Game has been confirmed for the next 3 years. Following this year’s Scout involvement, demand is expected to be high for next year and numbers may need to be restricted, with priority given to those Groups attending this year.

To take part, Scout leaders should either contact their local county to register, or call London Wasps on 01494 531122 quote “SCOUTS” or email communitySGD@wwfc.com
