On Monday 8th March Community Rugby Manager Dave Larham was the guest presenter at the Windsor RFC Coach The Coaches Evening. The 90-minute session was organised by Chairman of Rugby Tony Brooke to give 20 coaches from the club's Minis & Juniors an opportunity to develop new ideas and understanding from an experienced coach educator; working with players from the Windsor RFC U15s on "Thinking On Your Feet". Dave based the session on:
Fijian Touch; a decision-making non-contact game where players cannot be touched and turnover if touched by a defender. This game encourages the players' mindset to avoid the breakdown and use the ball, running lines, identify space and support to attack
Offload Touch; a decision-making non-contact game where players when touched by a defender, offload from the ground to a support player. This game encourages the players' mindset to create quick ball, avoid slow ball, support lines, identify space and a linear type of attack
2-Pass Touch; a decision-making non-contact game where players when touched by a defender, offload from the ground to a support player and immediately use 2 passes to attack the space outside of the guard / bodyguard defended area. This game encourages the players' mindset to create quick ball, avoid slow ball, change the point of attack, identify space and a lateral type of attack
Linear attack handling skills; focusing on drawing defenders, moving the ball to space, support running and realignment
Lateral attack; focusing on moving the ball through hands by using evasive ploys such as the switch & circle ball and running the correct running lines to attack the space in front, in between and outside the defence
Dave was full of praise for the Windsor RFC U15s, "The success of any Coach Education Workshop is normally how good the players are at adapting to new ideas and demonstrating the required techniques under an appropriate level of pressure. I really enjoyed working with the boys and was delighted when one of the players commented that the session had taken him out of his comfort zone and made him think about what he was doing. Windsor RFC are always fantastic hosts and it was great to see a good to see so many coaches willing to gain new ideas on such a cold night. A big thanks to Tony Brooke for inviting me to share ideas with the coaches and coach a very enthusiastic group of boys."
Tony Brooke said after the session, "Thank you again for your hard work and the great session delivered tonight, all the feedback was very positive."
