Wasps kick off under 18 academy league season in style at Sixways

Led by an Aaron O’Sullivan hat-trick and a brace from Tom Bacon, Wasps U18 Academy side got their season underway with a fluent 55-12 win against Worcester on the main pitch at Sixways.

Bad weather disrupted training sessions immediately prior to the game, and the start of the contest was dominated by Worcester whose kicking game pinned the visitors in their own 22, but good defensive composure meant the hosts came away pointless.

This meant the first points of the game followed a Worcester infringement, when Wasps kicked to the corner and Will Kelley applied the finishing touch after a series of pick-and-goes.

Further scores from Tom Bacon, hooker Alfie Barbeary and Aaron O’Sullivan, two of which were converted by Finn Pietersen, left the visitors with a 24-point interval advantage.

Wasps continued strongly at the start of the second half with further tries from O’Sullivan and Bacon, before Worcester managed to break down the black-and-gold defence to score under the posts.

The visitors then hit back through Taj Attu’s superb individual score. After receiving the ball on his own 22 and breaking a tackle, he raced to the halfway line, chipped over the fullback and won the race to touch down.

Minutes later centre O’Sullivan intercepted on the halfway line and raced away to complete a fine hat-trick.

Wasps’ final score came from a great team move after a lineout turnover deep in their own 22. The ball went wide before Joe Phillips drew the home full back and sent Sean Robinson 40 metres to the corner with a perfectly timed pass.

The final play of the game saw Wasps concede a try out wide, which Worcester were unable to convert, making the final score 12-55.

Wasps U18s are next in action on January 6 against Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park.
