Family fun for fans at Ricoh Arena on Sunday

Entertainers who have performed for the Queen and Hollywood A-listers are bringing a circus theme to the Ricoh Arena.

Sticks and Stones Productions are taking over the Wasps Fan Village ahead of the club’s European Rugby Champions Cup clash against Harlequins on Sunday, October 22 (kick-off 5.30pm).

A circus ringmaster on stilts will be parading the Fan Village to mingle and have photos with fans between 3pm and 4.30pm. The fan village is open from 3pm-5pm allowing fans to watch the La Rochelle v Ulster Rugby match on big screens 3:15pm KO.

At the same time, a circus workshop will be taking place for families to try their hand at some world-famous circus skills – including juggling balls and skittles, riding a unicycle and flexing their arms with diablos.

Steen Young is a director at Reading-based Sticks and Stones Productions, and has more than 30 years of experience performing and co-ordinating stunts in across TV, film and theatre. His business employs around 250 performers with 300 different costumes and themes.

He said: “This is a circus act with a difference because while people will be able to watch, we’ll be looking for people to take part as well by trying their hand at various tricks and stunts.

“Circus themes always prove a hit with families, and these are people who have performed with and for the very best, so visitors can expect a world-class performance from our circus acts at the Ricoh Arena.

“We’re hoping the circus workshop will rub off on some of the youngsters and even inspire them to become entertainers themselves, be it for their family and friends or as a career.”

Coventry-based Godiva Academy of Performing Arts will also be showcasing their talents with a circus-themed dance routine in the fan village.

Local adult choir the Local Vocals will also be warming up for a raucous pre-match verse of the hymn Jerusalem by performing a circus medley with local primary school children in the fan village.

Verity Brown, events and match day marketing manager at Wasps, said: “We are introducing some new entertainment into the fan village this season to keep things fresh for supporters, and we think the circus workshop and the stilt stunts man will definitely catch the eye.

“We’re also hoping a passionate rendition of Jerusalem before kick-off will help to fire everybody up and help the team to victory.”

Tickets for Wasps vs Harlequins are available from www.wasps.co.uk starting from £24 for adults, while under-10s go free.
