Match Reaction: Dai Young post Sale Sharks
Following Wasps’ 50-35 win at the Ricoh Arena to open their 2017/18 Premiership campaign, Director of Rugby Dai Young was pleased to come away with five points in the account.
“On occasions, I thought we showed some really good stuff out there. I was pretty pleased with the first half, especially in the first 20 minutes when I thought we were really disciplined. We didn’t try to play from too deep when it wasn’t on and I thought our exits were really good. We kept hold of the ball and came away with a really good start.
“We got a little bit loose in the second half, but you’ve got to give Sale a lot of credit. They’re a very hard team to put away and they’re always going to keep coming back at you. We had a five-minute spell there when there were only eight points in it. At that time, I thought the score was probably flattering Sale a little bit, but then by the end it probably flattered us a little bit instead.
“I was just really pleased to get the win. There was a lot of really good stuff, but, as normal, there was also a lot of things to work on. As we’ve said many times before, sometimes we’re our own worst enemy and we cause ourselves problems.
“It sounds ridiculous to say having conceded five tries, but there were parts of our defence that were really good. But I think if you look at where their tries came from, it was from when we had the ball. Our transition from attack to defence wasn’t quick enough.
“I was very pleased with the set-piece because Sale have a very good set-piece. I was pleased with 75 per cent of our play with the ball. Defensively we had some good stuff but at the end of the day we were disappointed to concede five tries and 35 points.”
