Wasps Academy form new partnership with Henley College Coventry

Wasps Academy are pleased to announce Henley College Coventry as an official partner.

The partnership will offer a bespoke educational programme, which provides learners 16-18 years-of-age with a platform to prepare them for a professional rugby career through the guidance of Henley College Coventry, an RFU Accredited College and Wasps Academy. 

Based at Henley College Coventry, the rugby programme offers the perfect environment for talented rugby players to combine the highest level of competition with a continued education. Learners will have the opportunity to compete at the very highest level of college sport whilst completing their studies.

Using a structured training and development route, learners are provided with everything they need to be successful at the top level.

Academic Programme

The programme constantly strives to ensure the balance between academic achievement and athletic progress is maintained, and although the rugby element is important, it is the academic side of the programme that will always come first. 

Henley College Coventry offer a range of study programmes to suit the learner’s academic standard and alongside their educational programme as part of the rugby programme they will also cover the following topics:   

  • Technical and Tactical Coaching: with forward thinking, creative and innovative coaches who'll test technical development and understanding of the game.
  • Strength and Conditioning: ensuring learners are prepared for the physical challenge of competition.
  • Physiotherapy: specialists on hand with medical support to keep learners at their physical peak.
  • Sports Psychology: developing the ability to cope with pressure when it matters.
  • Sports Nutrition: to ensure learners perform at their best by staying healthy and active. 
  • Performance analysis: technical and tactical elements for performance. 

Rugby Programme 

Henley College have worked hard to develop the perfect all-round performance package to take learners’ rugby skills to the next level. The level of support offered at Henley College Coventry is designed to mirror a professional rugby club environment. The study programme incorporates weekly training sessions which includes strength and conditioning training, game analysis and fitness testing.

  • Weekly fixtures in the AoC Sports Premier League, including cup and 7s competitions.
  • International tournament: Portugal International U19s Youth Festival in Lisbon.
  • Content and delivery 14 hours per week.

This course provides an educational and player pathway for talented rugby players to progress to Wasps Academy and even potentially the Wasps first team. Learners can also progress to higher education study programmes.

Hopefully this represents another step towards getting local youngsters representing Wasps at the Ricoh Arena.”

The rugby programme will provide players with a unique academic & rugby playing opportunity and we are delighted to be working with Wasps Academy and look forward to the journey ahead". 

Places on the programme will be offered based on prior experience, a learner’s rugby CV and performance in trials. Academically, applicants to Henley College Coventry will be required to meet certain criteria depending on the course you're applying for.
