Academy players enjoy two weeks of first team action
A total of nine Wasps Academy players were used across the two Anglo-Welsh Cup games over the last fortnight, with six involved in both games.
Wasps Academy's Tom Howe, Piers O'Conor, Will Stuart, Jack Willis, Tom Willis and Will Porter were involved in both of the Anglo-Welsh Cup games against Exeter Chiefs and Ospreys. Full back O'Conor, tight head prop Stuart and back rower Jack Willis started in both of the matches.
Ehize Ehizode, Jacob Umaga and Tom West played in the first game at Sandy Park. With Umaga unable to play the week after, because of his inclusion in the England Under 20 squad to play France in the opening game of their Six Nations campaign.
Wasps Academy fly half Connor Eastgate is also involved in the Under 20s Six Nations, having been named in the Scotland Under 20 squad.
It was all the more impressive that Will Porter and Tom Willis appeared in the Anglo-Welsh fixtures, as both are still part of Wasps' Under 18 squad. Willis joined his older brother Jack in both games, making his senior debut for Wasps in the first match against Exeter.
The pair's usual team, the Academy's Under 18s side have made a fine start to the season, winning all but one of their opening five games in the Premiership Rugby Academy League Northern Conference.
On the recent Academy players' game time, Wasps Academy Manager Matt Davies said:
"The Anglo-Welsh Cup has provided some brilliant experience for our young players here at Wasps. To step up and play in senior games is not only a huge test for them, but gives them an opportunity to be seen by the senior coaches in a competitive environment.
"For the Under 18 lads who came in, right through to those who have played in Junior World Cups over recent years, the chance to pull the Wasps shirt on and learn alongside senior players is an incredibly important part of their development."
