Wasps A to play Quins A

Wasps have announced their squad to play Harlequins A in the opening round of the Aviva ‘A’ League at Maidenhead RFC tonight, kick-off 19:30.

Wasps have named a strong side to take on Harlequins in tonight's Aviva A League fixture. Entry to tonight’s match at Maidenhead RFC (SL6 1BN) free for Wasps Season Ticket Holders or £5 otherwise.

New signings Alex Rieder, Jamie Stevenson, Tom Bristow, Brendan Macken and James Johnston get a chance to pull on the Wasps shirt for one of the first times and put their case forward for more first team action.

Bristow is joined in the front row by Phil Swainston and Senior Academy hooker George Edgson. James Cannon and Wasps U18s and Abingdon schoolboy Jack Holford make up the second-row. Rieder, a nominee for last season’s Championship player of the year, is named in the backrow alongside Thomas Young and Guy Thompson, who complete the forward pack.

In the backs Irish duo James Downey and Brendan Macken combine in the centres, as Josh Bassett, Rob Miller and Senior Academy player Owain James are named in the back three.

Former London Scottish scrum-half Stevenson teams up with Alex Lozowski as the half-backs partnership.

Current U18s and Henley College students Connor Eastgate, Caleb Shepherd and Jacob Turner are named among the replacements, alongside Senior Academy players Tom West and Tom Bliss and former Harlequin James Johnston.

A League coach Matt Davies said: “After a couple of brilliant wins in the European Cup, there is some real momentum at the club and we all want to win tonight to continue that.

"It is great to have so many senior players involved in the game, looking to put in a performance to show Dai Young that they should be involved in the first team.

"Meanwhile it is an opportunity for our Academy players to play alongside seasoned pro players and the experience they will gain is invaluable.”
