Wasps supporting initiative to give Rugby a ‘try’ during Coventry Sports Week
Wasps are inviting people to give rugby a ‘try’ during Coventry Sports Week.
Wasps and many other Rugby clubs across Coventry are joining together to promote the game during an action-packed day of rugby organised as part of Coventry Sports Week.
People will be able take part in free rugby activities at Broadgate in the city centre between 10am and 4pm on Friday, July 31.
Wasps, Coventry Rugby Club and the RFU will all be showcasing their skills and hosting a number of sessions for people to get involved in.
Engage! have organised the rugby day’s events and will highlight some of the work Wasps and Engage! have been doing to teach Rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, integrity, enjoyment and discipline to schoolchildren in Coventry.
A Wasps academy player will be on hand to demonstrate rugby skills and offer advice, support and encouragement to fans and players. Wasps mascot Sting! will also be involved in a three way mascot race against Coventry Bears and Coventry Rugby Club mascots.
Tom Clift, programme manager of Engage!, said: “The rugby day gives people in the area the perfect opportunity to test out their skills and learn new techniques for free.
“All of the local rugby clubs will provide an action-packed day of masterclasses, showcases and demonstrations suitable for all ages and abilities.
“With the Rugby World Cup just around the corner and just over two weeks until we welcome the Webb Ellis cup as part of the UK wide RWC Trophy tour on Sunday 16 August at War Memorial Park, there has never been a better time to try out the sport”
Nick Eastwood, deputy chairman of Wasps, said: “The Rugby Day of Coventry Sports Week represents a great opportunity to come out and try rugby and also find out how to join a local club. We believe that Rugby’s core values are of vital importance both to the sport itself and to everything we do as a club and so we are delighted to be able to offer our support to this important event.”
Coventry Sports Week will take place between Tuesday, July 28 and Friday, July 31 and will give people in the city the opportunity take part in wide range of free sports activities including climbing, tennis, golf, football, rugby and basketball.
The programme of activities has been organised by Coventry City Council with support from Coventry Sports Network, Coventry Health and Wellbeing, EnV and Engage!.
