Wasps to use Coventry's 2012 Host City Volunteers for first three games at the Ricoh Arena
Wasps has today announced that 40 volunteers from Coventry will lend a helping hand during the Club’s first game at the Ricoh Arena against London Irish on Sunday 21st December.
The ‘Coventry Ambassadors’ – who will also support the Club when they play Sale Sharks and Leinster in January 2015 – will be based around the stadium welcoming match day visitors with a map and directing them to where they need to go. At the end of the game they will be positioned to bid visitors farewell and direct supporters to coaches and public transport.
The Coventry Ambassadors initiative has previously supplied volunteers for the Olympic Games in 2012 when Coventry was a host city. Coventry Ambassadors have welcomed thousands of visitors to the city and ensured an effective welcome and signpost to what the city has to offer.
The Coventry Ambassadors volunteer programme – which was awarded an official London 2012 Inspire Mark for its part in the Olympic Games and the prestigious Queens Diamond Jubilee Award for Volunteering – is being managed and sustained by EnV (Coventry), a Community Interest Company (C.I.C) recently shortlisted for a Social Enterprise West Midlands Award, that manage a range of events, training and volunteer programmes across the local area with a vision of “Providing quality events, training and volunteers in the community, by the community, for the community.”
Nick Eastwood, Wasps CEO, said:
“It’s important to Wasps that everyone visiting the Ricoh Arena has an enjoyable match day experience. Working in partnership with EnV to secure local volunteers ensures rugby fans meet local people who are helpful, knowledgeable and proud of their city and the Ricoh Arena. We are very grateful for the time of the volunteers and the enthusiasm they have already shown in wanting to support Wasps during this exciting time for the Club.”
David Boughey, EnV Director, commented:
“EnV are really proud to be working with Wasps to help provide a warm welcome to the club, its partners and their supporters to Coventry with the fantastic Coventry Ambassador volunteers who always enjoy returning to the Ricoh Arena where it all began for them back in 2012. We are looking forward to helping both local and travelling supporters to enjoy their new match day experience in our city.”
Councillor Faye Abbott, Cabinet member for social enterprise said, “I’m delighted that our fantastic Ambassadors will be in and around the Ricoh to welcome everyone for the first few Wasps Games. Supporters, new and old, will be guaranteed a really warm welcome and I hope everyone enjoys the game and what for some might be their first visit to our fine city.”
