Match Reaction: Stephen Jones Post Irish

Stephen Jones gives his reaction to the 43-22 win over London Irish in the LV=Cup.

After the game, Jones was quick to attribute a lot of the credit to the forwards, who dominated the set piece and gave the backline a great platform to play from, but he also highlighted the great control shown by the halfbacks, Tom Bliss and Alex Lozowski.

“The forwards certainly gave us a great platform to play from. The set piece was very very strong, the work rate around the park was top drawer, but we had two young half backs out there this afternoon who managed the game very well and they should take some credit but the forwards were very very good. I thought we had a good balance in our game and there were a lot of players who carried well but it was a great display from the forwards that ultimately got us that win.”

“It showed the character of the group of the squad to come back from the half time deficit; it shows the commitment to eachother. I thought we played quite well in the first half, even though the scoreboard didn’t reflect how well we had played. We were conscious that we would be in an arm wrestle but I was glad that we stuck to our patterns and our beliefs and we came out on top.”

“A lot of the squad have been given some good game time in these last two weeks and, as coaches,  we have been given a good luck at some of the guys in the squad and they have put their hands up for future involvement, which is great.”

Jones also had special praise for man of the match Lozowski, who controlled the game very well and showed his attacking prowess to set up the try in the final minute that got his side the bonus point.

“He was man of the match and rightly so, he played very very well. This was Alex’s second game back for us after recovering from a hamstring injury so it’s great to be able to give him game time, and it’s wonderful for us as coaches when he plays as well as he did today. It was great play from him in the last few minutes to take the chance to grab us a bonus point and that extra point keeps us in this competition. We are an ambitious group, it’s as simple as that, and we want to do well in every competition we play in. That final score was key for us today.”
