Post Match Reaction: Dai Young
Dai Young gives his reaction to the 20-16 win over Northampton Saints at Adams Park.
After the game, Dai Young was in a bullish mood and said that he had asked the players why they were surprised that they had come out on top against last season's domestic champions.
"Why are we surprised? That's what I said to them and that's why we have been so frustrated as a coaching team. We know the quality we have in that room but what we need is self-belief and accuracy week in and week out. That's by far our best performance but that's the kind of performance we need to be giving consistently."
"That is the standard. We want to make some ripples in the Premiership but we have to achieve week in week out and not one in six."
Despite that, he said that he'd also made it clear that the team were entitled to savour the moment.
"We've got to enjoy it, I don't think we've beaten Northampton Saints too many times and for 80 minutes I thought we went toe to toe with them. There are still areas to work on but we have got to enjoy it."
After pulling ahead with two tries in less than ten minutes, the last moments of the game were nervy as Northampton scored with a few minutes left to try and snatch a win. Young said that he was as nervous as anyone else approaching the final whistle.
"I think the last 5 minutes gave me kittens because we were out of sight with about 8 minutes to go and then they came back but we nailed it and hopefully we can take a lot of belief out of this."
Wasps were forced to defend for the majority of the game and Young gave a large portion of the credit for the way they themselves to Defence Coach Brad Davies.
"Brad Davies has worked his socks off and deservedly so. Our organisation was good last season as well but this season I think we have added a lot of physicality. We won a lot of collisions today which we haven't been able to do in the past and that's all down to the attention to detail that Brad has put in. So I'm really pleased for him."
