Wasps A outdone at The Stoop
Wasps A were well-beaten at The Stoop on Monday night by an impressive Harlequins side boasting the likes of Paul Doran-Jones, Ben Botica and Jack Clifford in their ranks.
Harlequins A 35 – 14 Wasps A
A much younger, less-experienced Wasps pack came under pressure straight away at scrum time but, despite the clear advantage up front, Wasps held their own out in open play, dominating the opening exchanges.
Both sides struggled to string together any substantial period of possession in the opening period but it was Wasps who looked the most dangerous early on when good breaks from Buster Lawrence and Tom Howe opened up the Harlequins defence. Wasps moved up to within five metres of the Quins line but the home side managed to hold out the attack from the men in black and gold, and eventually cleared their lines.
The hosts got their first real attacking chance with 27 minutes on the clock and they took full advantage, building through the phases patiently, and a deft kick from Ben Botica opened up the Wasps defence, Joe Marchant racing onto the bouncing ball and going over the whitewash. Botica converted the try to put Quins into a 7-0 lead.
Harlequins grabbed a second try just before halftime. With the clock ticking down to the break Quins occupied territory deep within the Wasps 22 and at a scrum, Quins got a shove on and pushed their way over the line, with James Chisholm dotting the ball down. Botica converted the try to give the home side a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The second half started in the same way as the first finished, with Quins pushing over at a scrum to extend their lead to 21-0. Soon after it was Quins’ pack who grabbed another score, setting up a driving maul from the lineout and bundling their way over the line, which left the score at 28-0.
Wasps came straight back at the hosts, showing real character to fight back. The men in black and gold showed real patience, keeping possession of the ball and building good territory. It was Josh Bassett who scored Wasps’ first try of the game when he raced over in the left corner. Lozowski nailed the conversion to make the score 28-7.
With 68 minutes on the clock Harlequins grabbed themselves another score when they found a gap in the Wasps midfield to extend their lead to 35-7.
Again, Wasps came straight back at them, scoring the try of the evening. Lozowski and Bassett combined to break out of their own 22, down the left touchline. George Eastwell carried well in midfield before Ben Jacobs and Piers O’Conor combined out on the left, opening up the defence for James Small-Edwards to get on the end of the move and dive over under the posts. Lozowski added the extras to leave the final score at 35-14.
