Last weekend, Wasps defeated Viadana at Adams Park to secure a home Quarter Final against Gloucester at Adams Park. Having got to that stage last year only to be beaten by the eventual tournament winners Leinster, Cannon says that the team will be looking to improve on that this season.
“We’ve been quite successful over the last few years in the Amlin Challenge Cup and this year is no different. It is a great chance for us to claim some silverware and really stake a claim as one of the top Clubs. We all want to get to the Final of that competition and having the next round at home gives us a good advantage and a great chance to getting there.”
The weekend before Wasps travelled to Bayonne where they secured an impressive victory against a side who, in previous years, they had lost to and then drawn against. Cannon says that the win in France highlights the progress he and his teammates have made.
“It certainly feels as if we are moving forward every year from the squad’s perspective. The atmosphere around the camp is brilliant and now we are looking forward to playing some tough fixtures against some tough opponents and getting some victories under our belt.”
Despite not being able to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition Cannon says that the next two weeks in the LV=Cup hold more importance than it may first seem, with some real momentum with the squad currently and some big fixtures round the corner.
“Everyone wants to play. It is a game at Adams Park against a London rival and it is a great opportunity to get some good game time and stake a claim for some really big fixtures that we have coming up."
"This is the time in the season where you can either drop off or you can really start to accelerate and we will certainly be looking to do the latter. Last year we picked up a great win away at The Stoop and that is something that we will be looking to do again this year.”
