“I was pleased with our set piece today. We won a lot of penalties there which allowed us to get points and field position. It was nowhere near a perfect performance, we made mistakes which put us under pressure, but we showed real courage and commitment to each other and the players showed how much they wanted to get that victory with the last few minutes on the line. You give teams that much possession that close to your line and sometimes a score seems inevitable, and that effort we put in showed the measure of the team.”
Young added that it was important to win this week, following the disappointment of the loss last weekend.
“This week we were really honest with each other. I felt we let ourselves down last week. The players knew it wouldn’t be tolerated again. You are not always going to play well but last week we lacked desire which is a non-negotiable for any team I am involved in. They were told that in no uncertain terms this week. I wanted to see how much they wanted to play for Wasps and they have a responsibility to that shirt and I think they reacted really well today. We made mistakes but the attitude we showed in abundance I was proud of.”
With Christian Wade hobbling off, Young said it was too soon to tell what his injury was.
“Christian has gone over on his ankle but it’s too soon to know what he’s done yet. It’s swollen but he will go and have a scan on it.”
“On the other wing I thought Will Helu did really well. We was very physical in defence and good in attack. He was really safe under the high ball and I was really pleased with what he brought to the game. James Haskell also went very well. If this game was on TV he would have been close to MOTM. He defended well and he carried well as well. The pack were good overall and I think we can be pleased with that going into our two European games now."
