London Wasps inspire at Wellington College

On Wednesday 27th November, London Wasps supported the prestigious Wellington College Prep Schools Tournament at Wellington College in Berkshire. The Prep Schools Tournament saw Under 11 and 13 teams representing 30 independent schools from all around the country, in the age group Open and Festival competitions.

London Wasps Schools Programme Officer Ben Smiley supported the event, as a part of the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme, and acted as a standby referee for the event. Throughout the day, Ben officiated one Under 11 and two Under 13 matches.

In the afternoon, London Wasps and Italy centre and full back Andrea Masi visited Wellington College, where he met lots of young rugby players between their games. Andrea posed for photos, signed autographs and answers questions, some of which included;

How did you start playing rugby?

I started playing in my village, outside Rome. The village was a rugby village, and I played with my friends a lot.

What is your favourite game?

This has to be when I played for Italy against France in the 2011 6 Nations. We won 22-21, and I scored a try to help us beat the French!
(The try that Andrea scored in this game is also his favourite try that he has scored)

What is the best thing to do to make a tackle?

You have to decide to make the tackle. If you choose to tackle someone, you must be committed to making it.

What is it like facing the Haka?

I've played against New Zealand and faced the Haka four times. It obviously motivates the All Black players, but it definitely motivated me as well.

Following our support of the Wellington College Prep Schools Tournament, the College's Head of Rugby Kevin Tkachuk emailed to say: "Thank you very much for today! Really appreciated your help and support today. Many people commented how great it was to have a professional player at the tournament! They boys loved it!"

What is the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme?

London Wasps are committed to supporting the rugby that is already being played in all areas of the education sector.

The London Wasps Independent Schools Programme sits within the clubs' Community Schools Programme. It consists of a range of rugby based engagements for Independent Schools, that can last from 10-minutes to 10 or more weeks.

There are an infinite number of ways that London Wasps can support rugby in Independent Schools - if an opportunity for your school to receive elements of the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme is not listed here, it probably just means that we've not been asked to do it before!

For more details about how you can get involved, please contact us through the Independent Schools Programme pages, email our Schools Programme Officer at ben.smiley@wasps.co.uk or ring the Community Team on 01494 531122.
