Bucks New University Students 'Stand Out From The Crowd'

Read about our support for the Bucks New University Activities Week

On Monday 18th November our Community Rugby Manager Dave Larham was a guest panelist at Bucks New University for their Activities Week seminar entitled, "Standing out from the crowd - Developing a successful career in the sports business".

Dave chaired a guest panel that included:

  • Mike Walker (MD, Thomas International Sport, Chair of Bucks Institute of Directors)
  • Howard Wells (former CEO Irish FA, Watford FC, UK Sport)
  • Tim Holmes (RFU Rugby Development Officer for Bucks)

Following a brief career introduction from each panelist to describe their career and roles & achievements, the panel discussed:

  • What made/makes a difference in securing a first post in employment?
  • How have things changed for graduates in their experience?
  • What are the current issues affecting your job in the sector? (e.g. political, economic, social, technological)
  • How do you move from first post to senior sports business roles. What makes the difference to make the jump?
  • Longer term, what made the difference in moving from first post, middle management and CEO/senior management? How do you make the jump?
  • Once in the workplace does gaining more qualifications really matter?
  • What attributes, skills, experience are graduate likely going to have to demonstrate 10 years from now?
  • What does the university experience mean to you? Does it matter?

Following the seminar, there was an opportunity for the students to ask the panel questions.

Dave Larham stated afterwards, "I felt very honoured to be asked by the university to join the industry panel and chair the questioning. Howard, Mark and Tim shared a vast amount of diverse knowledge and experience with the students. I hope we managed to inspire and motivate this generation of future BNU graduates to be the best that they can be. Our students must be self-aware that there are many, many ways that they can make themselves employable in their chosen field against serious competition."

Paul Morgan from Bucks New Univeristy added, "Thanks again ever so much for this morning. You added great impact to the event and we really appreciated it."

We would like to thank Paul Morgan and his team from Bucks New University for inviting London Wasps to this event.
