On Saturday 9th November, London Wasps were happy to support the Winchester House School Under 9s Festival of Rugby as a part of the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme.
Winchester House School is a preparatory day and boarding school for boys and girls aged between 3 and 13 years. The school, located in Brackley, which is on the county borders of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire, has a number of Rugby and sports pitches located next to a purpose built sports hall.
London Wasps Schools Programme Officer Ben Smiley was joined by Community Referee Mike Head at the Festival of Rugby, and the refereeing team was completed by Thomas Falkingham from the Bloxham School in Oxfordshire.
The Under 9s Festival of Rugby is designed to celebrate rugby, with the emphasis on young players, skill development and playing in a fair, enthusiastic environment. In total, the event consisted of 12 teams from the following schools;
After refereeing at the Festival of Rugby, London Wasps Schools Programme Officer Ben Smiley told wasps.co.uk: "Both Mike and I were massively impressed by the standard of rugby that we saw. The Under 9s will only have been playing contact rugby since the beginning of September, yet their committment to tackles, rucks and mauls was amazing to see. Winchester House School did a great job in creating a positive environment in the players could concentrate on playing rugby, and this can only have helped everyone to have had a good afternoon of rugby."
London Wasps would like to thank everyone at Winchester House School for their warm welcome on Saturday.
We look forward to returning in February, when our Coachclass programme visits the school for 2-days. Coachclass and booking information can be found by clicking here, or by contacting us on 01494 531122.
