Read more from Ben Smiley about our 4-Day Coachclass in Surrey

During the October '13 half term, the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme moved to The Hawthorns School in Surrey, where the school were hosting a 4-Day Coachclass sponsored by BRITA.

Tell me more about The Hawthorns School
"The Hawthorns is a thriving day school for 2 to 13 year olds, with a striking atmosphere and friendly family ethos. We have high intentions for our pupils, are vigilant to their needs and also adapt to new initiatives as we evolve. We all work hard, in a delightful and stimulating environment, to ensure that love, fun and success are integral parts of the children’s learning."

The Coachclass, which ran between Tuesday 29th October and Friday 1st November, saw 30 young rugby players between the ages of 7 and 12 split into 3 age groups.

  • Under 7s and 8s - Coached by Ben Smiley
  • Under 9s and 10s - Coached by Jonny Pain
  • Under 11s and 12s - Coached by Will Brewer

On each day a different set of skills, paired together because elements of each compliment the other skill, were coached. Examples of these paired skills included Passing and Decision-making, Tagging and Defence and Tower of Power and Rucking.

For each age group, a daily prize of "Player of the Day" was awarded by the coaches, and at the end of the course three "Player of the Coachclass" awards were given. Congratulations from London Wasps go to the following Players of the Coachclass;

  • Jack Nicol - Under 7s and 8s
  • Max Nicol - Under 9s and 10s
  • Theo Ellis - Under 11s and 12s

Following the London Wasps Coachclass at The Hawthorns School, one of the participant's parents emailed to say; "Just a quick note to say thanks so much for last week - Tristan loved every minute and he can't wait to get playing at school. He hadn't played for about a year so it really was well timed. He watched the England game on Saturday and is turning into a rugby nut. I hope you run a Coachclass next half term as it is certainly beneficial to all."

Upon his return to Buckinghamshire, London Wasps Schools Programme Officer Ben Smiley told wasps.co.uk: "We were really pleased to be invited to The Hawthorns School to run a Coachclass. The facilities were excellent, as was the enthusiasm of the young players, all of whom put their all into the coaching activities that Jonny, Will and I ran. I can't wait to bring the London Wasps Independent Schools Programme back to The Hawthorns School in the near future."

After the success of this October's Coachclass, London Wasps are delighted to be returning to The Hawthorns School in February 2014. Full course details can be found by clicking here, by emailing Ben Smiley or by phoning the London Wasps Community Team on 01494 531122.
