Preview: Young looks forward to Europe

Ahead of the start of the Amlin Challenge Cup, we caught up with Director of Rugby Dai Young.

Wasps travel to Italy this weekend to take on Viadana before returning home the following week to take on Bayonne.

With back to back games against Grenoble in December, Young predicts a tough pool battle.

“I think this is probably the toughest draw we’ve had in the last few years. Going to France twice won’t be easy because those sides have good home records. I think we will need a bit of luck in the middle part of this competition to get most of our injured players back because those games in December and January are going to be really tough. I am confident if we can get some of our strike players back into the team we can go out to France in a positive place. They are not the places to go with half a squad really.”

First up this Saturday though is a trip to play Viadana and Young says getting off to a good start is a must.

“We need a bonus point win this weekend, it’s as simple as that. Without being disrespectful to Viadana, who we know won’t make it easy for us, if you have any ambitions of progressing in this competition you have got to go to Italy and get that good result in the bag.”

“We know it will be physical up front like it is every time we go to Italy but if we can keep the ball for multi phases we can break them down I am sure we can come home with the points we want.”

Young said he is likely to make changes to his squad for the weekend.

“On the back of five tough games in the league, where a lot of the boys have played week in week out, we will make some changes this weekend, especially when you consider the short turnaround we have before playing Bayonne.”

“To get us through these next few weeks we have got to utilise the squad. There are boys that are desperate to play so you would like to think they can do a job for us this weekend. It is up to us coaches to select the team well enough to get the two wins.”

Young also had positive news on the injury front with James Haskell currently easing his way back to training and with Elliot Daly unlikely to be out for long, following his replacement at halftime last weekend after he suffered a minor foot injury.
